The TWIST project (Training With Stakeholders – Applying European Addiction Research) funded by the European Commission provides a two-day training programme, aimed at early stage addiction professionals, embedded within the scope and programme of Lisbon Addictions 2017, the second European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies.

Who is the target audience? TWIST brings together over 140 early stage addiction professionals – from academic, clinical, public and civil sector organisations – with experts from research and non-research stakeholder groups. The project is working to ensure balance and diversity in terms of geography, ability, gender, and career stage.

The TWIST Training in Lisbon Addictions 2017 - The topics, contents and delivery formats of the TWIST training programme have been conceptualised and designed through a participatory process consisting of an online interactive open survey for stakeholders on the training programme, and an on-site co-creation workshop in Barcelona, aimed at defining meaningful training sessions and pathways within the programme of Lisbon Addictions 2017.
TWIST bursaries will cover the flight, hotel, daily lunches and Lisbon Addictions 2017 conference fees for training programme participants.

Eligibility criteria for applicants:

  • To be an early stage professional working in or entering drug/addiction fields, with less than 8 years since latest formal academic qualification
  • To be resident in a European Union country or neighbouring country
  • To complete the online TWIST Development Survey
  • To complete the TWIST Bursary application form and provide supporting information for selection by the application deadline (18h CET+1, 30/06/2017)

Participants have been selected on the basis of their need for support, the relevance of their academic and/or professional activity to addictions and drug policies and practices, and the scope and achievements of the academic and/or professional practice of the applicant in accordance with their career stage. TWIST is committed to ensuring balance and diversity in terms of geography, ability, gender, and career stage.

The Lisbon Addictions Conference 2017 and TWIST Training Sessions have now finished.

The 19 TWIST training sessions were designed to fit with the Lisbon Addictions Conference programme (LxAddictions 2017), to enhance understanding and involvement in the conference and support early-stage professionals attending Lisbon to make fuller use of the science presented there.

The Lisbon Addictions Conference 2017 and TWIST Training Sessions have now finished -

training material and further resources are available on the TWIST Training programme page.

Below you can find information on the online participatory process used to design the TWIST Training Sessions:

The TWIST Training Development Survey is one of the participatory tools that the project used to design and tailor the TWIST Training Course on Addiction (in Lisbon Addictions 2017) to the needs of the participants. The survey collects opinions on the content, delivery and best outcomes for the training course from the very people who will participate, and others in diverse areas of the drug and addiction fields.

Data from the survey was fed forward into the TWIST Co-creation workshop (12-13 June 2017 in Barcelona), used to refine and shape the training course further.

Completing the survey was also a requirement for early career professionals applying for bursaries and admission to the TWIST Training Course on Addiction in this year’s second European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (Lisbon Addictions 2017 - Oct 24-26). However, input was welcome from anyone with a professional interest in drug and addictions training, irrespective of career stage or plans to participate in the TWIST Training Course.

Further information will be available shortly in the TWIST deliverable reports (pending approval to publish).

The TWIST project (Training WIth Stakeholders – applying EU drug and addiction research) is designing a training strand on using addiction research and knowledge, with the participation of the target audience (early stage professionals and stakeholders from multiple sectors), to be delivered within the frame of the forthcoming Lisbon Addictions 2017 conference (LxAddictions17, on 24-26 October 2017).

During the evaluation of first edition of the LxAddictions Conference in 2015, a demand was detected to go beyond the usual conference communication formats, and complement the programme with an integrated training event to explore a selection of “hot” drug and addiction topics in-depth, and build capacity among different stakeholders, using novel interactive dynamic learning formats, knowledge and experience exchange, and multi-sector networking environments. The TWIST programme will meet this need through a two-day training programme, aimed at early stage drug and addiction professionals, embedded within the scope and programme of LxAddictions17.

Target audience. TWIST brings together over 140 early stage drug and addiction professionals – from academic, clinical and civil sector organisations – with experts from research and non-research stakeholder groups. We expect participants to come from a wide variety of European and neighbouring countries, and are working to ensure balance and diversity in terms of geography (including participants from lower income and less research-intensive EU and neighbouring countries), ability gender and career stage.

Participatory design of the training strand. The topics, contents and delivery formats of the TWIST training programme will be conceptualised and designed through a participatory process consisting of 2 main steps:

  1. An online training development survey and forum discussions with the stakeholder groups on the training programme content, formats and learning outcomes through the TWIST website.
  2. A co-creation workshop in Barcelona*, aimed at distilling the input from the TWIST online platform, and define meaningful training pathways within the programme of LxAddictions17 – invited participants will represent a range of stakeholder profiles, sectors and geographical areas.

* A limited number of places at the co-creation workshop (12-13 June in Barcelona) will be made available to people contributing significantly through the development survey (with past submissions taken into account retrospectively).

TWIST will cover the flight, hotel, daily lunches and conference fees for training programme participants, and the application process is now open. Participants will be required to engage in the participatory process to input in the design of the training strand via the online survey and forum.

The closing date for applications is 30/06/2017.
